Panglai ini bersaudara dengan tanaman sejenisnya yaitu diantaranya jahe (zingiber officianale), kunyi (zingiber c longa). Perbedaan mendasar pada ketiganya dapat di lihat dalam warna umbi nya kunyit lebih kekuningan walaupun ada kunyit putih dan hitam namun panglai tetap memiliki khas – an nya sendiri dengan bau yang sangat aromatik.

            Menurut pengetahuan lokal, pada saat panglai dikunyah lalu disemburkan, bau – bau an khas dari panglai tidak disukai oleh makluk halus sehingga bau – bau an tersebut dipercaya dapat mengusir makluk halus, pada sisi lain secara kandungan panglai yang mengandung asam organik, albuminoid dan sineol menimbulkan bau khas aromatik yang nyaman untuk anak balita.
            Yang menjadi unik dari panglai juga adalah jika kita mencari panglai di daerah sunda (bandung) ketika belanja di pasar tradisional maka panglai ini tidak akan ditemukan pada penjual bumbu dapur seperti jahe, kunyit dan lainya namun panglai bias ditemukan di penjual rampe, penjual rampe adalah penjual yang barang komoditinya seperti kemenyan, bunga – bunga an (rampe), panglai.
